Hi! My name is Tiffany Wang. This is my second semester in the Computing in Education program. After graduating from UCLA’s design and media arts program in 2002, I went to work in a variety of design roles in the educational toy/video game industry in California.
Here at TC, my goal is to learn how creative technologies can be applied to support learning and solve learning problems, as well as to gain a deeper understanding of how design influences the online experience, and extend my aesthetic senses. I also want to complement my academic interests in the learning and education fields with my practical desire to work on something which would have an impact on the world.
In addition, I am very much interested in online learning as a means of increasing equity between educational communities. Everyone uses social media, so educational tools and media should be similarly accessible and user friendly. I took one online class prior to signing up for this class and the experience, to my surprise was overall positive. The discussions were engaging and allowed the students to learn collaboratively.
Looking forward to discuss issues with everyone!
Hi Tiffany, Thanks for sharing. I read your first post, and there were a couple of things you said that resonated with me. Like you, I am in Computing in Education, though near the end of my degree program. This is my last class in the program.
ReplyDeleteI agree that social media use is pervasive in our society, and incline toward tailoring the use of technology for learning in order to make learning with technology equally as captivating and engaging for students in their learning as it is for them in a social and leisure context. As a long-time educator, I am a proponent of using these ubiquitous tools to educational advantage. We need to be creative and strategic to show kids these cool toys they can't be without are more than toys -- they can be highly effective tools for learning.
Hi Tiffany, it seems like we share similar interest. I am also in the Computing in Education program and integrating technology and learning is my area of interest. I worked as a software developer before, but have not had the experience to a lot of front-end design. Since you have a degree in design and media arts program, I am sure you have a lot of knowledge on designing to share with us!
ReplyDeleteHi, Tiffany -
ReplyDeleteYour post was very interesting to me, primarily because I admire anyone who has design and art tendencies. I do not, I'm afraid. I'm not convinced I would have ever possessed these proclivities, even with the right teachers or guidance! I’m one of those teachers, mildly irritated with kids that are quick to make an early judgment about themselves (“I can’t do math”, they wail…), and yet I don’t seem to mind articulating my own self-scrutiny. ☺ I wonder if you have seen this “TED talk” by Emily Pilloton on design in schools: http://www.ted.com/talks/emily_pilloton_teaching_design_for_change.html I found it fascinating. I’m amazed at people who can look at a font or a color and determine its effect on someone. I’ll look forward to hearing your views as we progress through the course!
Hi Tanya, Tricia and Xi :) Thanks stopping by!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to hear that everyone is from such diverse backgrounds. Design is a big interest of mine and I hope to discuss more about that in this semester! thanks for sharing the TED talk by Emily Pilloton...I'll def look into it sometime this weekend :)
